How to retract a bid on eBay

eBay treats a bid as a promise to buy, so you can only take one back in a few situations, and the timing rules are strict. Here’s when you can retract, how, and why retractions are one of the first things careful buyers check on other bidders.

Updated

When eBay lets you retract a bid

  • You entered the wrong amount. The classic case is $99.50 typed instead of $9.95. eBay expects you to bid the correct amount straight after retracting.
  • The description changed significantly after you placed your bid.
  • You can’t reach the seller, for example your messages bounce or their phone number doesn’t work.

Changing your mind, or finding it cheaper elsewhere, isn’t one of the reasons.

The 12-hour rule

  • Bid placed with 12 hours or more left: you can retract while 12 or more hours remain. All of your bids on that item are removed.
  • Bid placed in the last 12 hours: you can retract only within 1 hour of placing it, and only your most recent bid is removed.

How to retract a bid, step by step

  1. Find eBay’s bid retraction form in the Help pages (search “retract a bid”).
  2. Enter the item number of the listing.
  3. Choose the reason that applies.
  4. Submit. If you typed the wrong amount, place the correct bid straight away.

If none of the reasons fits, message the seller and ask them to cancel your bid. Sellers can cancel bids on their own listings, but don’t have to.

What a retraction does to your account

Retractions are public. Your retraction count for the last 30 days and the last 6 months shows on your bidder detail page, which anyone can open from an auction’s bid history. Too many can lead eBay to restrict your account.

Why other bidders’ retractions matter

A retraction can reveal a lot. A bidder who pushes the price up, leads, and then retracts once a real buyer has bid above them has learned that buyer’s maximum without having to buy. That’s why retractions, especially after leading, are one of the strongest signs Susbid checks, alongside a bidder whose activity is concentrated with one seller.

Most retractions are innocent: typos really are common. A single retraction is a reason to look closer, not a conclusion.

How to see retractions on an auction

  1. Open the listing and tap the number of bids.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the bid history for retracted and cancelled bids.
  3. Tap a masked bidder to see their retraction counts over 30 days and 6 months.

Or upload a screenshot of the bid history and Susbid will check the retractions for you.

Common questions

Can you cancel a bid on eBay?

Only in a few cases: you entered the wrong amount by mistake, the item’s description changed significantly after you bid, or you can’t reach the seller. Otherwise a bid is a commitment to buy if you win.

What is the 12-hour rule for eBay bid retractions?

If you bid with 12 hours or more left, you can retract while 12 or more hours remain, and all your bids on the item are removed. If you bid in the last 12 hours, you can retract only within 1 hour of bidding, and only your most recent bid is removed.

Do bid retractions show on eBay?

Yes. Retracted bids appear in a separate section of the auction’s bid history, and anyone can see a bidder’s retraction count for the last 30 days and 6 months on their bidder detail page.

Can a seller cancel my bid?

Yes. Sellers can cancel bids on their own listings, for example if they can’t verify a bidder. A seller cancellation is different from a bid retraction by the bidder.
